Martin Brooks' Catford Honeyz raise money for Havens Hospices

Martin Brooks (BGS 1975-82) and Nigel Hart
BGS old boy, Martin Brooks plays the guitar with Pouk Hill Prophetz, rock group heavily influenced by glam rock legends Slade and bands such as Sweet, T Rex and UFO,  but he and the Prophetz's lead singer, Nigel Hart also play in a band called Catford Honeyz.

On 30 January 2016 Catford Honeyz played a charity gig at the Mansergh Club, St John's Wood. The Mansergh Club is the home of the 8th St Marlebone Scout Group, known as the "Diehards". Martin says it is "a bit different to the one I went to with 5th Boston".

The band's connection with the club is that Nigel is a leader with the diehards. As well as being a scout leader, singing in the two bands and working in the BR Global Directorate, Nigel is manager for The House Of X which features ex-members of the band UFO.

During the Catford Honeyz's gig two members of The House of X got up and jammed. Martin remembers that in 1981, while he was at BGS, teacher Richard Anderson took a group including Martin to a UFO gig at the Birmingham Odeon. Although neither of those jamming at his gig were in UFO in 1981, this gig was a fantastic concert that is still vivid in his memory all these years later.

The gig on 30 January was held in aid of Haven House, raising money for a hospice for life-limited children. They raised more than £3,400 on the night and with online giving it seems the final total will be close to £4,000. "Not bad for a night's work", says Martin.

Donations are welcome.

  1. Thank you for this excellent report, Simon. It was a privilege to play this concert. Very humbling, but a night where there was definitely a lot of love in the air. From a BGS point of view, like so many, I owe so much to Richard Anderson, for encouraging and supporting my BGS group, Conflict and the German Club group, One Off and for our second gig, Two Off (sometimes referred to amongst ourselves as **** Off!) and for taking me and my mates to those gigs. Peace and Love, Martin x
