Prize Giving - Part 2

I attended the Boston Grammar School prize giving today at the Centenary Methodist Church.

Unfortunately I didn't get to hear the BGS Jazz Band, which played before the event started, but various musicians from the school accompanied Christmas carols and played a number of musical interludes which punctuated proceedings.

The main BGS news was that the school will become Boston Grammar School Selective Academy on 1 January 2013. This will mean the end of the Boston Grammar Schools Federation, although an umbrella governing body will still exist for matters where the two schools can usefully coordinate - Boston High School will also become an academy on the same date.


Academy status will bring with it some extra money, but only a small amount. The head teacher will be known as "principal", and to mark this, Paul Marsh, headteacher, instituted a new "Principal's Prize" and awarded it to Aidan McLure.

The prizes were awarded by John Cridland CBE, Director General of the CBI, and student of BGS in the 1970s, who also gave a short speech, which was very inspiring. John had spent some of the morning with students at the school who are doing Business Studies. He seemed very impressed by both students and staff at the school.

This year's Parry Gold Medal went to Bhagya Raj, who was not able to accept it from John Cridland, since he was in India with his parents.
