OBA Annual Dinner 2017

Guest speaker, Daryl Upsall FInstF
I am pleased to be able to announce details of the 2017 OBA Annual Dinner. It will be held at the Boston & County Club, and the guest speaker this year will be Daryl Upsall FInstF.

You can order your dinner tickets on-line using the form at the bottom of this post.

Soon after graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in Social and Political Sciences, Daryl began his career working in the national and international charity sector since when he has spent some 34 years working with over 240 non-profits in some 66 countries.

He has worked with such figures as Neil Kinnock, Harold Pinter, Julie Christie and Elton John. He was kissed by General Manuel Noriega in the midst of the Nicaraguan Revolution; Harold Pinter asked him to read and comment on his latest play; he introduced Graham Greene to Peter Gabriel; he collected an award from George Michael at the MTV Awards. He says he has never had a dull moment professionally.

Since 2001 Daryl has lived in Madrid. He owns a number of consulting and recruitment agencies in Spain and elsewhere that work for the world’s largest international charities, Red Cross and UN agencies.

Daryl Upsall FInstF is one of the few Fellows of the UK Institute of Fundraising and the outgoing Vice-Chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals based in Washington, DC. His proudest moment in fundraising was being personally thanked by Nelson Mandela for raising over US$2.5 million in 6 months for his election campaign...with a zero budget.

Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner 2016 - Report

As expected, there were fewer attendees at this year's old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner than at last year's. It was still a very respectable attendance of over 70 people; about average for the last few years.

Because of the reduced numbers we returned from the BGS assembly hall of last year to the comfortable surroundings of the Boston and County Club, near to the main entrance of Boston's Central Park.

People started gathering in the bar at 6:30pm and after a while there was quite a crowd and the volume was increasing.

Three of the five members of 1967 school band,
Gotham City were together for the first time in 49 years:
David Wortley, Ty Dalby and Nick Flynn
Past OBA President, Tony Austin
and his wife, Jill
George Danby and his wife Pearl
with Ken Newham
Pat Everitt and David Wilson
While we were all in the bar, Peter Milsom produced a painting by former BGS staff member, Hubert "Tilly" Turpin (BGS 1927-1964), asking what the subject might be. I have since confirmed that it is Ely Cathedral.

Once the OBA President, Peter Sharman had worked out that the PA was indeed piped into the bar, he managed to call everyone through to the dining room at about 7:30pm for an excellent and well waited meal.

The top table, left to right: Thomas Vamplew (BGS student and quiz scorer), Smilte Matutionyte and Joe Dean (students and OBA museum curators), Peter Sharman (OBA President), Brig Bill Dunham CBE BSc (guest speaker), John McHenry (BGS head teacher), Harvey Potter (Head Boy), Damian Austen (Deputy Head Boy)
After dinner there was a short break before the speeches: time to mingle again.

After a brief introduction and loyal toast from OBA President, Peter Sharman, Richard Anderson took the microphone to introduce our guest speaker, Bill Dunham (BGS 1972-1979). Bill joined the Royal Marines in 1979 straight from BGS and had a long and varied career including command at every level up to Brigadier. His Career culminated in roles as Commandant of Commando Training Centre, as Chief of Staff of the NATO Training Mission in Kabul and finally Deputy Commandant General. He left the Corps on 31 March 2015 and now works as the Director of Strategy and Corporate Services at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Bill's speech was entertaining and thought provoking, relating with stories both serious and funny how his time at BGS and in Royal Marines training informed his later career, and indeed lessons real and tongue in cheek that we can all take from his experiences. He then went on to propose a toast to The School.

The response was provided by BGS head teacher, John McHenry, who acknowledged that the recent Ofsted report of the school indicated that continued improvement was necessary but balanced that with an explanation that while the inspectors had to show three years of improvement, they acknowledged the last two showed an "upward trajectory". On the specific point made about the behaviour of students, he made a good argument that the two incidents referred to in the report were not significant. He also noted that the school is an academy but that the current drive is for schools to be involved in multi-institution academies. This need not mean the school being swallowed up into a larger organisation but does mean it needs to select partner schools, and select them wisely.

The official business was brought to a close by the Head Boy, Harvey Potter, who spoke of his view that speaking at the OBA Annual Dinner was one of the highlights of his year in office. He also acknowledged the honour he felt in following his brother Ellis Potter into the role; Ellis gave the response to the toast to The School at the dinner in 2014.

Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner 2015 - Report

Richard Anderson leads
everyone in some exercises
As predicted the Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner 2015 was a huge success. Once Richard Anderson, the almost universally popular Modern Languages teacher of 43 years (and one term) who retired in 2014, was booked as the guest speaker, it seemed almost inevitable that we would achieve a record attendance for recent years, and so we did.

I hope you enjoy this long report with many photographs. Maybe you will be able to identify long-lost friends in some of the images - click on an image to see a larger version.

The last few dinners have been held at the Boston and County Club where our recent record of ninety-something stretched comfort; last year's sixty-something was perfect for that venue. We needed somewhere larger, and the solution was in hindsight obvious - we returned to the school hall for the first time in probably a couple of decades (dinners around the turn of the 21st century were held in the school dining hall). This time we were able to bring with us the excellent caterers from the county club and all was set.

OBA Annual Dinner - Confirmed Details

We now have confirmed details of the Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner 2015. Following an excellent response to the request for early expressions of interest, we believe we will have outgrown our recent regular venue at the Boston and County Club, so we are returning to the School this year and holding the event in the Assembly Hall. The move should not however impact quality since Julie Holland and her team from the Boston and County Club have given the kitchen facilities at the school their seal of approval and they will be travelling across town to serve us again.

Here are the details, which are also available in the OBA diary.

Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner 2015

The preliminary announcement of the 2015 annual dinner has been made today. The guest speaker will be Richard Anderson (BGS staff 1971-2014). This is the old Bostonian Association's way of marking the retirement of this long-serving and widely admired member of staff.

The dinner will take place on 28 March 2015, provisionally at the Boston and County Club though with Richard proposing the toast to The School, the demand for tickets is expected to be high, so we may outgrow the venue, a problem which, according to Peter Sharman, current President of the Old Bostonian Association, would be "nice to have".

There are a lot of details still to be sorted out but it is not too early to express your interest in ticket(s) to president@bostonian.org.uk. More details will be made available on the official OBA diary as they become available.

You do not need to be a member of the Old Bostonian Association to come along. If you are a former student of Boston Grammar School or a current or former member of staff, you are entitled to apply for up to two tickets (one for yourself and optionally one for a non-qualifying guest). The price of tickets has not been set at the time of writing but as a rough indication tickets to the 2014 event were £20.00.

2014 Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner - report

Back row: Aaron Rymer (BGS student),
Harry Tebbutt (BGS student), Ellis Potter (BGS Head Boy);
Front Row: Catherine Wolfe-Smith (guest speaker's wife),
Richard O Smith (guest speaker),
Peter Sharman (OBA President)
The 2014 Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner took place on 22 March at the Boston and County Club. As has become traditional, the evening started with about an hour in the bar, giving time for people to meet old acquaintances and make new ones.

Pete Milsom had brought a photograph of the Boston Borough Council taken in 1964. His father, who was a councillor and in the photograph, had listed most of the names but as was customary at the time, he had noted everyone as "Mr so-and-so". Pete wanted first names. Even I managed to fill in a couple of them, but Tony Austin provided the majority and I believe most of the rest were filled in by others.

The OBA President, Peter Sharman and I had a bit of a nail-biting time while we awaited the arrival of Richard O Smith (BGS 1975-1982), the guest speaker and his party: his wife Catherine, and Matthew Ledbury (BGS 1980-1985). They did indeed arrive in time and we were very relieved.

It  was good to see current BGS staff member, Richard Anderson at the dinner, together with his former colleagues, Ron Abbott, Rod Dunn and Nick Fitton.

OBA President, Peter Sharman
The Boston and County Club as usual came up with a very pleasant meal which was efficiently served. After coffee, Peter Sharman proposed the toast to The Queen, and we had a short break for refilling glasses.

Guest speaker, Richard O Smith
getting animated
Next came the speech by guest speaker, Richard O Smith. Richard was very entertaining, speaking about his lack of academic achievement at school, moving on to working in a pet shop, and then to writing obituaries for The Boston Standard, and on to his current work, writing books and script writing for radio and TV. Although he continued to speak for well over his allotted time, most people who expressed an opinion to me said they could have happily listened for longer. As is customary, Richard finished with a toast to The School.
BGS Head Boy, Ellis Potter

The response on behalf of the school is usually provided by a member of staff but this year it was ably handled by Head Boy, Ellis Potter. He spoke of the challenges of the year, including the flood of December 2013 and finished off with the traditional toast to The Old Bostonian Association.

There were 52 people present at the dinner. Unfortunately Bill Olle, who had also booked a ticket, was not able to be present due to last-minute family commitments.

Richard O Smith - Feature

Richard O Smith will be the guest speaker at the Old Bostonian Association Annual Dinner, 2014. I previously
cobbled together a biography. Thanks to Richard I can now do a slightly better job of it.

Richard was at Boston Grammar School 1975-1982. According to Richard, he "was at BGS for 7 years, though I didn't ever pass any exams! Got told by a teacher 'thinking up jokes isn't going to get you anywhere in life, Smith!'. True, although it did get me a writing job on Dara O'Briain's last BBC2 series!".

He grew up in Freiston, and started his writing career as Freiston and Butterwick correspondent for The Standard, before setting up the Boston United Fanzine From Behind Your Fences. He was named as National Football Writer of the Year as a result of his work on this publication, which led him to work with The Independent and When Saturday Comes.

Richard writes for BBC Radio 4's The Now Show, The News Quiz and BBC2's Dara O'Briain's Science Club.

He has had several books published, including Oxford Student Pranks (praised by Dr Lucy Worsley as "I was expecting the book to be a jape-filled jamboree of jollity, but it turned out to be full of sex and violence as well") and Britain's Most Eccentric Sports (described by Dr Phil Hammond as "very, very funny" and acknowledged by Henning Wehn as "better than all 26 days of one of your English cricket matches").

Richard is a Chortle Comedy Award Winner, a former National Football Writer of the Year, and pens the popular "Oxford Examined" column for the Oxford Times. He is the appointed Writer in Residence at the Daffodil Hotel, Grasmere, in the Lake District and co-scriptwriter of the movie Foosball, directed by Academy Award winner Juan José Campanella.

His next book will be As Thick As Thieves, subtitled "Foolish Felons and Loopy Laws".

Old Bostonian Association Dinner 2014 - guest speaker Richard O Smith

Richard O Smith with two of the books he has written
The date is set for the 2014 annual dinner of the Old Bostonian Association. It will be held on Saturday 22 March 2014 at the Boston & County Club.

We are very pleased to be able to announce that the guest speaker will be Richard O Smith.

Have you heard of gravy wrestling, F1 pram racing, 100m in high heels and dwile flonking? These are just some of the weird and bizarre sports uncovered by Richard O Smith  in his book, Britain’s Most Eccentric Sports. Richard is a writer for Radio 4’s The Now Show among others.
