James Robert "Jim" Howes (BGS 1933-40)

Jim Howes passed away peacefully in his sleep on 31 October 2015. There will be a private Family Cremation followed by a celebration of his life towards the end of November at Holy Trinity Church.

Jim was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Boston on March 15, 1999, in appreciation of services to the community. He had been chairman of governors of both Boston Grammar School and its Charitable Foundation, past President of the Old Bostonian Association (1978-83), Chairman of Trustees for Holy Trinity Church, past chairman of 337 Boston Round Table, past president and Paul Harris Fellow of Boston Rotary Club.

BGS library reopens

At 12pm on Tuesday 17th June, Boston’s Mayor, Councillor Alison Austin officially reopened Boston Grammar School’s Library. After six months the school’s traditional heart is restored and back in use following the tidal surge and resulting flood in December 2013.

In attendance were Phillip Bosworth (Chair of Governors), Brian Pycock (Chair of the Foundation Governors), Jim Howes (ex-Chair of Governors), Mick Todd (Governor), Peter Sharman (Old Bostonian Association), pupils and members of staff.

Mrs Ellis and her tutor group were pleased to welcome the guests to the celebration and ceremony. The school is very grateful to all those who have supported it throughout this time. It is reassuring to be reminded of the school’s character and resilience.

Peter Sharman said: "I attending the Library re-opening yesterday - it looks better now than before the flood!"

Extraordinary General Meeting - A brief report

It's been a busy weekend for me and I have lots of things to post here and elsewhere about it. A report of the OBA Annual Dinner will follow as soon as I can complete it but first this. Friday evening (19 April 2013) was an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Old Bostonian Association.

There would usually have been a committee meeting the day before the Annual Dinner but it was converted to an EGM this year mainly because of the recent untimely death of Paul Mould. At the time of his death Paul was holding the posts of Secretary and Membership Secretary. He had also edited the last issue of the association's magazine "The Old Bostonian" and he played an important part in the organisation of many of the association's social events: annual dinner, snooker tournament and quiz night among them.

The main business of the meeting was to elect a new Secretary and Membership Secretary.
