John Lewis Dickson died on 17 January 2012 at Dorset County Hospital, aged 87 years.

While at BGS, John won the Parry Gold Medal (1942), of which he was very proud. Because of wartime restrictions, the medal was made of bronze rather than of gold. He went on to become a nuclear science engineer on the staff of the Atomic Energy Authority at Winfrith in 1946 and lived in Dorchester.

At the time of his death, John had been married to his wife, Eileen, for 63 years.

John was the son of Herbert Matthew Dickson who came to BGS as a science teacher in 1927 with an honours degree in natural sciences from Fitzwilliam Hall, Cambridge and after a spell lecturing at Woolwich Polytechnic. HM Dickson was acting headmaster for a while, when Leslie Thomas Waddams left in 1954. In 1962 he was awarded the MBE and he also left BGS in that year.
