1981 senior prize-winners
It's been a while since I added an article to the OBA Wiki. I won't bore you with the details of why: partly me feeling not too great, and partly having the sad job of publicising lots of deaths. Anyway, I'm kicking off the wiki again with a photograph of the Boston Grammar School senior prize-winners of 1981. I've named some of them, mainly my own school colleagues, but there are still quite a few left to be named if you feel up to the challenge.
If you've got anything to add on this article or anywhere on the wiki, I encourage you to set up a user account for yourself, roll up your sleeves and get to work on it. You can't do anything seriously wrong - if I see you've accidentally wrecked a page I can restore it, so don't worry that you haven't edited a wiki before.
If you don't feel confident enough to get your hands dirty then just send me an email with the details you would like to add, and I'll apply them as soon as I can.

Alan Reams - Obituary
Alan Reginal "Regie" Reams (BGS 1937-40)
Alan Reams of Fishtoft, passed away peacefully at his home on 23 February 2013, aged 87 years. The funeral service was held at St Guthlac's Church, Fishtoft on Thursday 7 March 2013 at 1:30pm followed by cremation.
Alan was interviewed in 2012 by The Boston Standard about his memories of the 1948 London Olympic Games. About the 2012 games he said "I think we’re very lucky to have the Games – it’s a great event to have and I hope it’s a great success. There is no comparison to the events now. The whole thing only lasted a week and it was pretty amateur compared with today."

Edward Hackford - Feature
Edward Hackford (BGS 1949-57) was born in Boston and studied Science and Theology at Cambridge. He has worked extensively as an election observer in emerging democracies such as Moldova and Kosovo, and has witnessed, first-hand, the effects of economic and political change on every day people, and particularly the aspirational youth. It is this insight he shares with the reader in his first novel, Deadly Consignment.
Formerly Chief Executive of St Albans District Council, now retired, Edward has been Chair of the Trestle Theatre Company, Secretary-General of the European Consortium of Local Government Chief Executives’ Associations, a non-exec Director of an Enterprise Agency, and a Trustee of St Albans Cathedral, alongside his international election monitoring work. His hobbies are chess, bridge and squash. Edward was guest speaker at the OBA 2012 Annual Dinner.
Deadly Consignment is available in paperback and, from Amazon as a Kindle eBook.
OBA Web site change
I've just removed a page from the OBA Website. The page in question was "OBA News". That's not to say there will be no future OBA news, just that this blog is a far better place for it. It means you, the reader, can comment, articles can automatically be advertised on Facebook, and it's just easier to post them.
There were two rather old articles on that page that haven't been published anywhere else, so I have reposted them here.

Michael Hale - Obituary
Michael Hale with his wife, Lola |
Michael J Hale (BGS 1979-86)
It was with great shock and terrible sadness that we learned last month of the death of Michael Hale, a great friend and a much-loved family man. Michael passed away in Murcia, Spain, where he lived with his family, after a very brief illness.
Michael was born in 1968 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and moved with his family to Boston in 1978, completing his primary education at Tower Road School and entering BGS in September 1979. Popular with staff and fellow pupils alike, Michael’s warm and engaging personality, spontaneous charm and unfailing good humour won him many friends.

Extraordinary General Meeting - 19 April 2013
OBA President, Peter Sharman, has called an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Old Bostonian Association at 6pm on Friday 19 April. The meeting will be held in the Library of Boston Grammar School. All members of the Association are encouraged to attend if possible.
The meeting will take place the evening before the Annual Dinner, so a number of old boys living away from the town are likely to be available to attend who would not normally be able to attend such an event. Your participation would be welcomed.
Following the untimely death of Paul Mould, your Association is now left without a Secretary, Membership Secretary and Newsletter Editor. The Association is now at a critical point and we are looking to the Membership for ideas of how your Association could and should move forward. We obviously wish to appoint a new Secretary at this meeting but I think it is an excellent opportunity to shape the Association for the future. We are in a healthy financial position at present and a number of our Committee would like to see more funding channelled towards assisting pupils with funding for worthwhile causes.
Your presence at the Meeting would be greatly appreciated but if you are not able to attend any written suggestions would be welcome. I assure you no-one will be railroaded onto the Committee simply because of attendance at this Meeting!
